With Signum And Goline, Safety Finds Its Way Even Inside Tunnels!

“As a rule, the characteristics of the work environment - for example, in relation to its healthiness, microclimate, or lighting of various spaces - are important when assessing health risks for workers. These risk factors become even more relevant in special environments such as tunnels, caves, or shafts.”
This is how “EdilTecnico”, the daily journal for industry professionals, highlights the issue in an in-depth article.
Goboservice, a benchmark for over two years in lighting projection solutions for safety signage, has taken on the ambitious challenge of bringing its Signum series projectors into one of the tunnels, currently under construction on the Italian road network - a naturally hostile environment, where dust and low visibility severely test traditional signage systems.
This took place on a key occasion: the breakthrough of the last diaphragm wall in the Casacastalda tunnel on the SS318 Perugia–Ancona highway. The route is 3 kilometers long, approximately 80% of which runs underground. The removal of the final rock wall, in the presence of Umbria Regional President Stefania Proietti and the Mayor of Valfabbrica Enrico Bacoccoli, marked a strategic milestone in the project’s timeline, which anticipates opening the entire stretch to traffic by March 2026.
With the coordination of Kiwitron, Goboservice set up a luminous safety signage system to protect Anas workers at the construction site. Using 4 Signum projectors and one Goline, they projected three regulatory signs, a red line, and a custom gobo featuring the logos of the involved companies, adjusting the projections as work progressed.
The idea came from Daniele Dolciami, a safety professional concerned by the repeated difficulty in similar environments of seeing and making visible the required safety signs. While this is already an issue in factories or workshops, in a construction site carved into the bowels of a mountain, it becomes a diaphragm to break through. And why not break through it with a beam of light? Perhaps one like that generated by the powerful Signum, which has already proven its reliability in the harshest work environments, where humidity or pollutants are present.
The idea proved successful. The projected signs were not obscured by dust or residual materials and effectively caught the attention of workers engaged in various tasks. The versatility and durability of the projectors allowed for confident safety work, without needing emergency interventions or system repairs.
All project stakeholders - from Anas to companies Donati Spa and Besix, and experts like safety manager Marco Ambrogi and Valfabbrica’s technical director Andrea Giordano - expressed satisfaction with the projection results. Both contributed to the practical success of the trial, gaining useful information for future improvements.
